With winter upon us and the dark evenings well set in it can be hard to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Long gone are the hikes and sea swims (for most of us at least).

The importance of maintaining hobbies for the sake of good mental health is clear, so it’s better to keep moving through the colder months.

Looking for a new pastime? Check out our list of winter-proof hobbies below.

1- Indoor rock climbing

For those looking to push themselves and get a bit of an adrenaline buzz, the wall can be just the ticket.

There are climbing clubs popping up everywhere these days so one is always near.

After a winter up and down the wall, you’ll be ready to try the real thing when the warm weather comes back around.

2- Indoor football

5-a-sides. From casual kickabouts to serious soccer there’s something for everyone on the indoor or AstroTurf pitch.

It’s a great way to work up a sweat and make a few new friends, which is key to keeping your mental health in good shape.

3- Learn to play an instrument

Playing an instrument is proven to decrease stress and anxiety, helping us forget about life’s little problems.

Those of you who have already mastered a musical instrument can relate.

For those who haven’t yet given it a go, winter is the perfect time to try. Finding a good outlet for any creative tendencies can be a good way to manage that mental health.

4- Badminton

Look for your local club. They’ll probably have a club night for everyone from the amateur to the scary good.

If you’re looking to pick up a new sport and fancy meeting some new people, these club nights are for you.

They’re usually cheap and cheerful with equipment provided so get down and start practising your skills.

5- Art

The great thing about making art is it can be an individual undertaking or a social experience.

If you’re looking to engage with others, take an art class. Get some tips and see where it goes.

Or you could just tinker away at home. Photography, painting, sewing or sketching can provide a nice stress release.
